How to remove your manicure at home
How to remove your manicure at home
If you went to the salon and got a manicure and now you want to remove it, what are your options? Well, the good news is you can remove any kind of manicure at home – except for acrylics – no problem, and we’ll walk through the different options you have for each kind of manicure below.
The first and easiest thing to remove is nail polish – also called nail lacquer. It is the easiest to put on and it removes the easiest. Don’t pick at the polish if it starts to lift or peel, that will damage the top layer of your nail. If it begins to chip or peel or you just want the color off, then you will need acetone to get it off. The easiest way to remove your nail polish manicure is to:
- Use a file to take the shine off of your nails. This breaks the top sealing coat and allows the acetone to soak through the nail polish easier
- Soak a cotton ball with acetone and then rub your nail, the polish should remove after some gentle rubbing.
- Repeat on each finger until you’re done!

Removing a nail polish manicure at home couldn’t be any easier – all you need is some acetone and cotton balls and it can be removed in minutes.
How about how to remove a Gel Polish manicure? That’s no problem, and we’ll show you how to do it here as well. It’s very similar to how to remove nail polish. You will definitely want to file the nails this time to remove the shine. Its kind of optional for a nail polish manicure, but it really helps save time with a Gel Polish removal, so you want to make sure you file real well first. If you have a drill and feel comfortable using it you can use that, otherwise a file is just fine.
After you break seal of the manicure by filing, you will again soak a cottonball in acetone. This time, however, we aren’t just going to rub the gel polish like we did with the nail polish. That would take too long. Instead, we’ll use foil wraps to hold the acetone-soaked cotton ball on the nail. You can just take a piece of foil and cut it into smaller strips, big enough to wrap the cotton ball in place on your fingernail. The foil wraps will hold the cotton ball on your nail and let the acetone soak through. You can let them sit for about 10 minutes. If the acetone has soaked through enough you will be able to wipe away the gummy gel polish that is left after soaking. If its gummy but not able to be wiped away, you can use an orange stick to help remove it, but if it can’t be peeled off with an orange stick then you need to put the foil wraps and cotton balls back on – it needs more time.
So once you’ve let the foil wraps and acetone-soaked cotton balls sit for 10 minutes, you wipe away the Gel Polish and you’re all done. To recap, the steps are:
1 – Use a file or drill and remove the shine from the Gel Polish manicure – this will help the acetone soak through to make removal easier
2- Soak cotton balls in acetone and then use foil wraps to hold them in place. Let the cotton balls sit for at least 10 minutes.
3 – Once the acetone has soaked through the gel polish, use the cotton balls to wipe up the sticky residue it leaves behind.
- All Done!
The next manicure we’ll tackle is Dip Powder. Dip lasts longer than Gel Polish or Nail Polish so it is a little harder to get off. You can follow the exact same steps as Gel Polish, just file a little more or let the cotton balls rest on your fingers a little more. It looks like this:
1 – Use a file or drill and remove the shine from the Dip Powder manicure – this will help the acetone soak through to make removal easier
2- Soak cotton balls in acetone and then use foil wraps to hold them in place. Let the cotton balls sit for at least 10-15 minutes.
3 – Once the acetone has soaked through the Dip Powder, use the cotton balls to wipe up the sticky residue it leaves behind.
4 – All Done!
Revel Nail has recently patented a new way to remove Dip Powder and Gel Polish manicures at home – it’s called Swift Soak.
It has a Patented design that heats the acetone, which makes it much more effective, safely and quickly. Acetone is extremely flammable so its very dangerous to expose it to direct heat. Swift Soak uses a 2-chamber system to allow you to fill one area with hot water and another with Acetone and the hot water will safely warm the acetone with no danger of flammability. The Swift Soak bowl also has bristles that will help remove the manicure quickly. Women can remove their manis in as little as 3 minutes using Swift Soak.
If that seems like it would be easier for you, you can check it out here: https://www.revelnail.com/products/swift-soak-manicure-removal-system?variant=43152746741958
